"Thoughtful, critical, committed to expounding an openly manifold perspective toward all modern life, these and other releases by Soft Skull endorse a new, enlightened way of looking at society. Harsh politics and inspired fiction aside, in a nation that starves for real reality, Soft Skull Press has solidly grounded, daringly provocative food for the brain."
—Willamette Week
"One of the most visible and respected alternative houses in the US...like Grove Press in the 1950's and 1960's."
—Quill & Quire (Canada)

Join one of our electronic mailing lists and receive emails from us about our NYC events and parties, national tours, new releases, and other Soft Skull updates.
We have three: the general Announce list, which goes out very infrequently now, we suggest folks set their RSS feed to www.softskull.com/news, the new Soft Skull blog; the Shortwave list, which is weekly, and has information on Soft Skull author readings in New York City; and finally the Media list, which has press releases intended for members of the media, two to four times a month.
Feel free to sign up for any or all of them; we use a piece of email list management software called Mojo, which is easy to opt out of at any time.
Please read our Submission Guidelines, as well as the rest of the information on this page.
Please contact Richard Nash using our firstname at softskull.com system.
Why not start by reading our Frequently Asked Questions page?
Our e-mail addresses are our first names at softskull.com; e.g., joe@softskull.com would be the email address of one of us, if one of us was named Joe. We don't have direct email links on this page, however, in order to avoid the machinations of the evil email-address-harvesting junk mail robots. If you are not a robot, and you're sure your question has not been answered on our Frequently Asked Questions page, then feel free to contact us. Thanks!

Hello. I used to do publicity here. But I know my old colleagues would love to hear from you, just email the general e-mail address, which is my address but with publicity instead of kristin.

I grew up in the green pastures of Ohio; here in Brooklyn, I still spend most of my time reading. I studied fiction in school, but I'm enthusiastic about a lot of different writing. I'm freelancing now, but still have my softskull email account.

Nice Intern Co-ordinator
Do you read Chicago for fun, and it hard to tear yourself away from it? Have you gotten in fistfights over the serial comma? Do you have dictionary.com bookmarked? Do you get so lost in Roget's that you forget why you picked it up in the first place? Do you like copyediting and proofreading manuscripts, especially of cool new literary fiction and sexy new left-leaning political titles? Do you like the idea of doing that for free? If so, please get in touch, we want you. But keep two things in mind: we now only have one or two internships in New York--most of the opportunities are now at the mothership office in Berkeley California. (What mothership, you ask? Well, we've joined forces with two other independents, and the main office is in Berkeley CA.) So, to apply there, you need to email Sharon Donovan, whose email is Sharon [dot] Donovan [at] shoemakerhoard.com

Editor at Large
Hi y'all. I'm an editor at large for Soft Skull and previously served as both Publicity Director & Associate Publisher. I cofounded the Frequency Series and also hosted the Soft Skull Sneak Peek Series at the Bowery Poetry Club. (Sorry, I have closed my SSP email account, & am no longer considering submissions. After my current books are completed I will be moving on to other projects.)

Fringe Pressman
Hello there. I am Don. I am the editor of Soft Skull's art imprint, Shortwave, and three years ago I dreamed up our book, zine, music & art space of the same name. I have been with Soft Skull since 1996. I am ALWAYS on the lookout for books that will challenge the ideals of the compact majority and help people to think outside the proverbial mind-box.
To get get an idea of what I love, check out the books I have helped conceive and publish with Soft Skull: Hi How Are You? The Definitive Daniel Johnston Handbook (1999); Popaganda: The Art & Subversion of Ron English (2001); Painful But Fabulous: The Lives and Art of Genesis P-Orridge (2002); and Peops: Portraits and Stories by FLY (2003).
My Shortwave imprint guidelines:
1) Please don't contact me for consideration of publishing your book unless you own at least two of the books I have worked on.
2) Please don't send anything to me until we have communicated via e-mail (I hate suprises)
3) Read Soft Skull Press's submission guidelines!
Thanks for submitting!
In my sparetime I am a publishing consultant, literary agent, photographer, music producer, New Situationist, artist, songwriter, and graphic designer. I also work as Daniel Johnston's caretaker/tour manager and I manage Brooklyn's enigmatic songwriter Jack Medicine.
I reside in Brooklyn and Manitou Springs, Colorado.
Click my face to see the whole picture of me with my wife Jeana, son Sawyer, and dogs, Oblio (dalmation) and Lucy.
