“I try to let go of intention when I’m writing. I want to get out of my conscious mind. There are a lot of ways in which our experiences are mediated. Our brains try to put them into forms that are comprehensible, and sometimes that means a lot of information gets lost. I’m trying to get to the experience before my brain has a chance to formulate it into something closer to a familiar thought. I want what’s as close to the primary source as possible.” —Elaine Kahn
