I talk to my friends about every aspect of my life and work and they fill the roles that, for many American thirty-year-olds, a family would be supposed to fulfill. How to have relationships that aren’t instrumentalized, while also relying on them as support structures? I certainly am not asking for a substitute or a replacement for the family, but a new model of togetherness that at some point I hope becomes more intergenerational and class aware. It definitely isn’t in Anja’s world.
